This week, enjoy some photos from UTA Fall Nationals 2013 in Plano, TX. More photos coming soon!
I had a great time in Texas this weekend (though the drive was quite long). Thanks to Master Jason Wadley and the UTA for an excellent tournament!
I don’t know who many of these competitors are; I just like to take a lot of action shots. If you recognize someone, and want a full resolution copy of the image, just let me know!

Olney Taekwondo Center (OTC), 233 E Main St in Olney, hosted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Isaac Birch of Ft. Branch, Ind. for a special seminar June 29.
The event, which was open to the public, attracted participants from all over southern and central Illinois. Birch offered specialized training separately to both adults and children. He was assisted by two of his blue belt students: Tony Meredith of Princeton, Ind. and Andy Scamman of Ft. Branch, Ind.
Birch, a Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Marcelo Ferreira, has trained in martial arts for 20 years, earning instructor’s credentials in nine different martial arts. He has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for over 15 years, and has competed nationally and internationally.
“This was an amazing seminar,” OTC chief instructor Nathan Wheatley said. “I decided immediately that we’d be having Mr. Birch back regularly for seminars.”
Birch spoke highly of OTC and its students following the seminar.
“Mr. Wheatley appears to run a nice and well organized academy,” he said. “His students were very receptive and seemed to pick up the techniques well. He’s cultivated a positive family atmosphere for his students.”
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling and ground fighting, and has risen to prominence because of its frequent use in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions like the UFC. Wheatley said Jiu-Jitsu makes a good compliment to Taekwondo, which focuses on stand-up striking.
“It’s important for self-defense to know at least some ground fighting,” he added. “I work ground into my Taekwondo curriculum, but it’s great to learn from the source as well.”
OTC will again host Birch at a yet-to-be-determined date in the fall. Those interested in this or other future Jiu-Jitsu seminars should contact the school at 392-3800 or http://olneytkd.com to register. Students of other martial arts are welcome.
As Olney’s only dedicated martial arts training facility, OTC strives to provide quality martial arts instruction by blending traditional values with modern training techniques, offering programs in traditional taekwondo, mixed martial arts (MMA), self-defense and KickFit adult cardio. All of OTC’s instructors have met stringent instructor certification requirements and teach a standardized curriculum. OTC is located at 233 E. Main St., across from Arcadia Cinemas, and can be reached at 392-3800 or http://www.olneytkd.com.
