Olney Students Win Big in Mattoon

MATTOON — Students from Olney Taekwondo Center (OTC), 233 E Main St in Olney, competed here Oct. 5 in a Kyumson Taekwondo Alliance (KTA) tournament, bringing home 10 gold medals and two grand championships.

“I’m very proud of all our students,” chief instructor Nathan Wheatley said after the event. “Win, lose, or draw, these kids gave it all they had. They’re all gold medalists in my book.”

Red belts Nicole Klein of Sumner and Kyle Rennier of Noble placed highest of the local competitors, capturing grand championships in sparring for their age groups (Klein for ages 9-12, and Rennier for ages 8 and under). To win a grand championship, competitors must win 1st place in their own division, and then defeat all other 1st place winners in their age group.

Local competitors placing in forms competition were: James Benton, 1st place (special abilities division); Tristan Patterson, 1st place (beginner age 7-8 division); Nicole Klein, 2nd place (advanced age 11-12 division); Kyle Rennier, 2nd place (intermediate & advanced, age 7-8 division); Lucas Shadle, 2nd place (beginner age 6 & under division); Aidyn Voyles, 2nd place (beginner age 9-10 division); Ophelia Klein, 3rd place (advanced age 9-10 division); Avery Miller, 3rd place (advanced boys age 13-15 division) Reid Snyder, 3rd place (advanced age 11-12 division); Lexi Shepherd, 3rd place (intermediate girls age 13-15 division); Tyler Hinkle, 3rd place (beginner age 7-8 division); and Xander Holtz, 3rd place (beginner age 6 & under division). Honorable mention in forms went to: Connor Summers, Conner Holtz and Tyler Holtz.

Local competitors placing in sparring competition were: Nicole Klein, 1st place (advanced age 11-12 division); Kyle Rennier, 1st place (intermediate & advanced age 7-8 division); Lexi Shepherd, 1st place (intermediate girls age 13-15 division); Ophelia Klein, 2nd place (advanced age 9-10 division); Avery Miller, 2nd place (advanced boys age 13-15 division); Tyler Holtz, 2nd place (intermediate & advanced age 7-8 division); Reid Snyder, 3rd place (advanced age 11-12 division); and Connor Summers, 3rd place (advanced age 9-10 division). Honorable mention in sparring went to Conner Holtz.
